Social Security sickness benefit payouts increase due to dengue outbreak

Posted: Tuesday, August 27, 2019. 3:51 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: As the outbreak of dengue fever across Belize continues, the Social Security Board ( SSB)   has seen a spike in the amount of sickness benefit claims between January and July, resulting in payouts of over $40,000 more than for the same period last year.

According to the SSB, there were 88 claims for the month of July alone, and claims from January to July were 6.8 times higher than the same period for the year 2018. SSB Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Colin Young, told our newsroom, “In 2018, January to July, SSB paid out
$5,637; in 2019, we have paid out $49,461 for the same period- a difference of $43,823.”

Young stressed that the figure represents payouts for Dengue alone and that the situation emphasizes the importance of paying Social Security contributions.

In a message to its stakeholders issued this week, the SSB reminded employers that that under the Labour law, workers should receive 100% of their salary for up to 16 days of sick leave within a calendar year.

“The SSB encourages all persons who qualify for SB to submit claims on a timely basis which is now within 14 calendar days from the first day of illness; however, the sooner the claim is submitted and allowed, the sooner payment will be deposited to your account. If you are
unable to submit your claim to the nearest office, someone can submit the claim on your behalf,” the SSB said.
