“Vincy Heat” returns to Belize in preview of Nations League

Posted: Wednesday, August 28, 2019. 9:40 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: For the next week or so Belize is on international football duty, starting with a pair of friendlies against St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The “Vincy Heat” plays two friendlies in as many days at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, playing on Friday night, August 30 at 8:00 p.m., then on Sunday afternoon September 1 at 4:00 p.m.

The Jaguars will then head to French Guiana in mid-week before returning home to host Grenada.

Belize and St. Vincent last met in November 2011, in World Cup qualifiers for 2014. Belize drew the home fixture 1-1, then won 2-0 away on a pair of goals by Deon McCauley.

The countries share a cultural connection through the Garinagu people, which originated on the island as a mixture of indigenous and African slaves, before they were forcibly deported to the Central American mainland for rebelling against the British overlords. The first Garifuna arrived in Belize in 1802, with a larger migration in 1823 continuously observed as Garifuna Settlement Day.
