By BBN Staff: The Northern Maya Association of Belize is hosting Maya Heroes day on Saturday, August 31, 2019 in Orange Walk.
The ceremony will commence at 9:00 a.m. at the Battle of Orange Walk monument.
The event will feature cultural Mayan ritual and presentations.
Vice-president of the Association, Arturo Cantun told BBN that the event is the 3rd annual Maya Heroes day.
“The Northern Maya Association of Belize is holding the 3rd annual Maya Heroes day. This will take place in Orange Walk town at the Battle of Orange Walk monument on Queen Victoria Avenue. It starts at 9:00 a.m. with a short ceremony. A wreath laying ceremony and during the ceremony we will be recognizing 2 local cultural activists. They will be presented with plaques. This is in recognition of the work they do in safeguarding the Maya heritage,” Cantun stated.
Following the ceremony, there will be a full day of dance presentations at the Orange Walk central park. Traditional Maya food will be on sale.
A special exhibit on Maya history and culture will be featured.
A major highlight of the event will be the female Pok-Ta-Pok ball game competition.
In addition, Cantun said that the purpose of the event is to highlight the work of cultural promoters in safeguarding the Maya heritage.
“ It is an opportunity to honor and celebrate the struggles of past Maya warriors such as Marcus Canul, Maximo Perez, Jesus Ken, Jacinto Ayuso among others,” Cantun added.
The event is also an opportunity to learn more about the Maya heritage and culture.
All Belizeans are invited to attend and learn more about the rich cultural history of the Maya.
