By BBN Staff: The Belize Brain Awareness Society (BBAS) is offering free screening for autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Belmopan today.

The event, which began at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. at the Department of Youth Services office, is being held in collaboration with Dr. Cindi Rosado and Clinical Psychologist Deshane Gutierrez, the only two people in the country qualified to make the assessments in this specific area of diverse abilities.

The event will also feature games for the children, read aloud sessions from the “Tek time fi read” project and parents can receive literature on the two conditions.

Kaylia Nunez Ambassador, Founder, and C.E.O of Belize Brain Awareness Society, said that she decided to host the event having seen a need for it by virtue of her profession as a teacher. Nunez said that many students who go undiagnosed tend to have difficulties in school and in their home lives stemming from the ignorance of the people in their surroundings.

“People don’t often realize that trouble is a cry for help,” Nunez said.”I want the parents to leave here with more knowledge and understanding to be able to cope better with their children.”

The BBAS hosts monthly activities promoting education and awareness about various issues affecting mental health, particularly of children, and has championed the cause of many children suffering from various mental illnesses.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how a person acts and interacts with others, communicates, and learns.

ADHD is a medical condition. A person with ADHD has differences in brain development and brain activity that affect attention, the ability to sit still, and self-control.
