By Aaron Humes: The Upper House is currently meeting in the National Assembly, Belmopan, with three new members.
Attorney Herbert Panton was appointed to stand in for Minister of State Dr. Carla Barnett on the Government side, while Isabel Bennett and Dr. Louis Zabaneh were sworn in, replacing Valerie Woods and Paul Thompson, on the Opposition side.
The People’s United Party has now completed the reshuffle of its Senate membership with the appointment of Michel Chebat to replace Eamon Courtenay at the previous meeting.
Welcoming the new members, President Darrell Bradley asked them to remember that their contributions are to be done in the now-established order of calmness and cooperation.
The Senate is debating four new motions – one on visa requirement exemption for holders of diplomatic passports from Estonia and three related to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and its associated organs – and three brought from the House: the IDB loan motions for the strengthening tax administration project and contingent loan for natural disaster emergencies and the Taiwan loan for upgrading the Corozal-Sarteneja road.
Also to be approved from the House is the Belize City Council (Municipal Paper) Bill; the National Liquefied Petroleum Gas Project Bill; and the Land Tax (Partial Remission of Arrears) Bill.
We’ll have more during the course of the day.
