By BBN Staff: The United States is bracing for impact as Hurricane Dorian has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm consistent with predictions made earlier this
States of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, as Dorian is coming with winds of nearly 145 miles per hour. Authorities in the US have advised residents in areas within the projected path to stock enough food, water and medicine to last at least a week.
The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that the storm could bring “incredibly catastrophic damage” and possibly be the worst storm since category five Hurricane Andrew which killed 65 people and destroyed 63,000 homes in 1992.
“Life-threatening storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are still possible along portions of the Florida east coast by the early to middle part of next week,” the NHC said.
In an advisory issued today, the NHC said Dorian was not expected to make landfall in Florida, but that the possibility cannot be ruled out. There are many Belizeans living in the state of Florida and the Belizean Consulate in the state issued a statement earlier in the week saying that it would be closed until further notice in preparation for the storm. Belizeans seeking any urgent consultatory services can contact the Belizean Consulate in the State of Washington until the Florida Consulate re-opens.
