Catastrophic damage across the Bahamas caused by Category 5 Dorian

Posted: Sunday, September 1, 2019. 8:50 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:  “Please pray for us,” was the plea of Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis today as Hurricane Dorian, the most powerful storm on the planet right now, hit his country earlier today.

Dorian came with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour and gusts going all the way up to 220 miles per hour. The strong hurricane caused flooding on the islands, major damages to homes, moved vehicles, uprooted trees and caused power outage to the entire Abaco Islands.

The power outage makes getting updates from the Bahamas difficult, but international weather experts say that the island was severely battered because the storm slowed down as it descended upon the Bahamas. The eye of the storm, around which the winds were the strongest, passed right over the Bahamas, hitting the island repeatedly with powerful winds. The weather channel reports that the eye passed twice over the Bahamas, hitting the Abaco Islands severely when it passed the second time. The storm also brought storm surges that were over 20 feet high.

No official word has been issued on any loss of life as a result of the storm; however, authorities had issues earlier today as residents did not want to evacuate their homes. There is currently an advisory in place asking everyone in the Bahamas to stay in their shelters at this time.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) will update as more information becomes available. BBN joins with Belize and the world in praying for the people of the Bahamas during this difficult time.
