Five confirmed dead, thousands of homes destroyed following Hurricane Dorian

Posted: Monday, September 2, 2019. 8:00 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Information coming out of the Bahamas is that five people have been confirmed dead so far and as much as 13,000 homes destroyed following the Category 5 Hurricane Dorian.

The deaths were confirmed by authorities in the Bahamas, who say they still aren’t sure how many persons ignored the evacuation warnings and the pleas from authorities to seek shelter. Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said that the deaths were all from the Abaco Islands, which had been hit hardest by Dorian, which has since downgraded to a Category 4 hurricane.

Minnis say that with winds above 150 miles per hour, and the storm itself moving at just over 1 mile an hour, Dorian is still a very dangerous storm and that the country’s main priority right now is “recovery, rescue and prayer.”

The government of the United Kingdom says it has dispatched humanitarian aid experts to the Bahamas, while the United States is sending in Coast Guard personnel. Efforts are already underway to determine if there are any more casualties and determine the needs of those currently affected by the storm.

Meanwhile in the United States, evacuation efforts are ongoing for at least three states, while some have openly declared to the media that they intend to weather the storm in their homes.

Authorities in the US have advised against doing so, as Dorian’s winds and storm surge flooding is extremely dangerous, and the storm is expected to remain very powerful for the next few days.
