Guatemala ex-presidential candidate Sandra Torres arrested

By BBN Staff: A Guatemalan judge has just ordered the imprisonment of Former Presidential candidate, Sandra Torres, while she awaits trial.

Torres was arrested this morning in her home and taken to Court.  

The arrest allegedly stems from investigations for the crime of illegal electoral financing.  

Prensa Libre Guatemala reported that Judge Claudette Dominguez also ordered for a medical evaluation on Torres and sentenced her to the Mariscal Zavala prison.  

Torres is accused by the Public Ministry (MP) of irregular electoral financing and illicit association crimes that she committed during her election campaign in 2015.

The 1st declaration hearing will be held on Friday, September 6.

The report indicated that Torres’ attorney requested that she be treated at a private health center since she suffers from heart problems.  

The judge denied the request and ordered the country’s National Institute of Forensic Science to conduct the medical evaluations.

Sandra Torres, who claims part- Belizean heritage was leading in the presidential polls in July but lost to President elect-Alejandro Giammattei.
