GOB: Reynaldo Verde’s employment status will go before Public Service Commission

Posted: Thursday, September 12, 2019. 11:01 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize issued a statement this morning regarding the detention of Belize’s Deputy Director of the newly amalgamated Belize Tax Services Department, Reynaldo Verde.

The Government informs that Verde was transiting through the United States on his return to Belize from Brussels, after attending a taxation workshop organized by an international tax organization when he was detained on September 7, 2019 in the US.

In a press release, dated September 9, issued by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau stated that Verde was arrested by complaint for his alleged interference with commerce by means of extortion and attempted extortion.

He was later charged for these alleged offenses and it is understood that he pled “not guilty.”

In its press release, the FBI advised that no further information on this matter would be released at this time.

“It is, therefore, not known at this time the nature of the charge or whether it is related to Verde’s employment with the Government of Belize,” GOB says.

The Government says that as more information becomes available,  Verde’s employment status with the Government of Belize will be put before the Public Services Commission in accordance with the rules and regulations for the Public Services for consideration and decision.
