By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) today extended condolences to the families of the men killed on Friday when the platform of the scaffolding upon which they were working gave way.
The PUP extends get well wishes to the other four men injured.
The men sustained various injuries after reportedly falling some 30 feet to the ground.
“This is in no way a political issue, but after listening to the news reports which state that there were concerns about the safety of the scaffolding and learning that the men wore no harnesses or safety gear, we believe that questions should be raised and persons held responsible,” the PUP says.
The PUP also notes the critical need for the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Bill, tabled in 2014 but still not passed.
The PUP says that the bill must be revisited since we have all seen construction workers onour roads and other infrastructure in plain clothes and even slippers, and the risk to the safety of these workers is unacceptable.
The PUP calls for a proper investigation into the tragic accident at the Belize Civic Center on Friday and urges relevant stakeholders to revisit the OSH Bill with a view to implementation.
In addition, the PUP says that in Belize, unfortunately, it seems that it takes senseless tragedy to spur necessary action.
“We must work to ensure that we do have the reoccurrence of a tragedy such as this one,” the PUP added.
