By Aaron Humes: While yet to establish a motive for the murder of Christopher Chi in Orange Walk, police have their suspicions.
And those suspicions have driven Commissioner of Police Chester Williams to advocate for extending the curfew in place in Belize City to cover all of Belize.
At a press briefing, the Commissioner noted with some alarm that children “are not being treated like children,” allowed to roam in mischief day and night, and he lays the blame at the feet of parents, whom he says should “find a way to know more about what their children are doing, who their child is with, and if it is that the child is a child of school age, that the child is in school.”
Williams says the Chi murder “has some drug implications,” and adds that there are children out peddling drugs on behalf of older persons, potentially for financial gain for their families.
Keeping the kids off the streets starting at nine in the evening makes parents accountable for what their children are doing, he contends.
As for the Police’s own work, Williams made note that their plans for the City are going well at the moment, and they have appeared to quell for the moment the “balloon effect” of City criminals influencing or directly committing crime.
