Bonefish and Tarpon Trust to develop strategic plan for flats fisheries in Belize and Yucatan

Posted: Wednesday, September 18, 2019. 2:02 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust (BTT) is preparing a large-scale strategic plan to address the many growing threats to the flats fishery in Belize and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

The BTT announced today that Dr. Addiel U. Perez, the BTT’s Belize-Mexico Program Coordinator, will be spearheading the development of the strategic plan beginning with a tour throughout both countries to meet with stakeholders in flats fishery.

His meetings and interviews will have widespread representation as he engages with the Fishing Community (fishing guides, lodge owners, tour guides, fishing industry representatives, anglers), Education
(researchers, teachers, administrators), Management (administrators and employees of government agencies and co-managers), Conservation (administrators and employees of non-governmental organizations and foundations.

The strategic plan will seek to address major threats such as habitat loss and incidental and target capture from small-scale fisheries.

“The top needs are: 1) education and awareness; 2) enforcement of current and elaboration of new regulations; 3) planning for economic and human resource needs; 4) collaboration among all four sectors. This new strategic plan will be built from the ground up, with a local focus,” the BTT said.
