By BBN Staff: Minister of National Security and United Democratic Party (UDP) Party Leader candidate, John Saldivar issued a statement this morning disassociating himself from ‘attempts to blame the parents, family of friends’ of murder victim, Adamir Choc.
Saldivar’s statements comes at the heels of controversial statements made by UDP Chairman Alberto August, whose distatsteful comments went viral on social media yesterday.
In August’s comments, he states, “ While no one deserves to be killed by another person, the question you should really be asking is where was the family when this poor soul, obviously in need of parental and family guidance, was out there in the public stumbling drunk from club to club seeking attention.”
His comment caused an outrage on social media with Belizeans condemning victim shaming.
Saldivar also took to social media this morning to inform that while he does not agree with those who try to lay blame on the police for every murder, he does not associate himself with any attempt to blame the parents, family or friends.
“ The society we seek to create is one in which all are able to enjoy their rights and liberties in a safe and secure environment and no victim of their family should be blamed when murdered while in pursuit of those rights,” Saldivar added.
Furthermore, he pledged that police will do their utmost best to apprehend the persons responsible for these heinous crimes and ensure they are brought to justice.
