By BBN Staff: The Belize Peace Movement (BPM) is calling on the Government if Belize to reconsider the decision to grant two public and bank holidays for Independence Day, because of the negative impact it will have on the business community.
The BPM said that granting a public and bank holiday on Saturday, September 21 and another on Monday, September 23, will negatively affect small and medium-sized businesses, which will need to make additional holiday payments out to employees.
“This will no doubt lead to further losses in productivity and the prospects for creating more employment for Belizeans,” the BPM said.
The BPM contends that with Belize’s economy in decline, according to the last quarterly report from the Statistical Institute of Belize, the high cost of fuel, high crime rate, a perceived loss of investor confidence, and the relatively high costs of doing business, the country simply cannot afford the second public and bank holiday.
