Department of Environment investigates vessel grounding near Caye Caulker

Posted: Friday, September 20, 2019. 5:57 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: Eight persons had to be rescued after a catamaran with tourists aboard ran aground in the Coral Garden section of the Barrier Reef north of Caye Caulker.

The boat’s owners, Coral Tours Belize Limited, removed the 32-foot double hull catamaran from the site where it grounded on Friday evening.

The Departments of Environment (DOE) have been investigating and according to a DOE official speaking to Channel 5 News, the damage assessment finds at least five different types of coral, about a quarter of the area, damaged, two of which are endangered. The scene measures thirty-five by five feet.

The catamaran is Belize-registered but owned by a Colombian.

A monetary figure for the damage has not been given but both the captain and the company itself could be faulted pending the result of the investigation.
