Government of Belize reviewing law firms to represent the country at the ICJ

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize (GOB) is reviewing a list of attorneys to represent Belize at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Prime Minister Dean Barrow explained that GOB is not dissatisfied with the performance of the current attorneys Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP (informally known as Fresh Fields) but that the exercise is being done to try and get the best deal for the Belizean people given the “great great deal of money,” it will cost.

“We thought that, for the purposes of transparency, now that you’re getting to the point where you have to pull the trigger on this huge expense, the Belizean people deserve to know that we invited a number of law firms to as it were tender for the contract, the retainer to represent Belize at the ICJ,” Barrow said.

He noted that all the law firms that were considered are first-rate and that he has been working with the opposition during the selection process obtaining opinions from Leader of the Opposition John Briceño and Eamon Courtenay.

Barrow said that a final decision will not be taken until Ambassadors Assad Shoman and Alexis Rosado have interviewed all the law firms that submitted bids and then make a final recommendation.
