Belmopan Mayor and Deputy Prime Minister open Independence Day by citing unity in diversity

By Aaron Humes: Under changeable skies in the national capital, Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle and co-chair of the September Celebrations Commission Patrick Faber opened the ceremonies with a call of unity in diversity.

Belisle, doing the official welcome, noted in the context of the Belize-Guatemala referendum earlier this year that we must work on improving our ability to discuss national issues such as these without resorting to name calling.

Citing a few humble servants, Belisle posited that the “modern glory” posited in the theme to the September Celebrations lies in our doing our jobs to the best of our abilities no matter who is watching.

He also added that while there is much more to be done, Belize is blessed.

Faber cited the inclusion of Celebrations activities countrywide and once again called on Belizeans to take up the mantle left to us by our ancestors.

The Minister also presented a copy of the revitalized national flag to the son of one of its creators, Ines Sanchez Sr..
