By BBN Staff:Belizean authorities conducted 1 of the largest drug busts in Belize’s history.
Among the men arrested is Ecuadorian Juan Pablo Larrea. Larrea is 1 of the six foreigners arrested on September 8, 2019 at a remote landing strip in Southern Belize.
The men were attempting to unload 1340 kilos of cocaine from an aircraft.
Larrea is the brother of Eduardo Larrea, the former director of civil aviation in the Government of Rafael Correa (the Former president of Ecuador).
Eduardo is currently in prison accused of participating in organized crime activities.
The United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) estimated the street value of the cocaine at $205 million.
The DEA called the bust “massive and unprecedented.”
Authorities believe that the shipment was coordinated by the Mexican Sinalao Drug Cartel.
In addition to Larrea, the other men arrested were from Mexico and Honduras.
Local media in Ecuador are reporting that the Larrea brothers are partners in an aviation company and Ecuadorian authorities say that they are in contact with Belize police to verify the ownership of the aircraft used in the drug shipment.
