Posted: Friday, September 27, 2019. 11:54 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The  Commonwealth Ministerial Committee on Belize reaffirmed their support for Belize’s territorial integrity at a meeting in New York on Thursday 26, September 2019.

The Committee issued a statement, following the meeting, which was requested by Belize’s Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, supporting Belize and raising concerns about the conduct of Guatemala towards Belize.

“The Committee was concerned to hear from the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belize about the continuous illegal encroachment by Guatemalans into Belizean territory resulting in the deforestation of Belize’s protected forests and the illegal extraction of Belize’s natural resources. The Committee also expressed concern that Guatemala’s armed forces continue to carry out unfriendly acts along the entire Sarstoon River with a view to asserting ownership,” the Committee said in its nine-point statement.

The meeting centered around briefings that Elrington presented to the committee regarding the efforts Belize and Guatemala are taking to resolve the territorial dispute, including committing the dispute to the International Court of Justice. The committee commended Belize and Guatemala for taking the steps and also commended the Organization of American Sates OAS for its role in the process.
