Gaspar Vega joins Saldivar in leadership battle against Faber

Posted: Sunday, September 29, 2019. 6:08 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: While former deputy leader of the United Democratic Party and former Deputy Prime Minister Gaspar Vega keeps his own counsel concerning a return to the political spotlight, old foe and current holder of both positions Patrick Faber awaits the challenge.

Vega was thought to be done politically when he stepped down as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources in 2016 following a land scandal which involved his son, Andre. He remains the area representative for Orange Walk North but had no intentions to seek political office once more.

But he has apparently decided to become more active, and rumors swirl that he is seeking to replace Faber as first UDP deputy leader under John Saldivar at next February’s internal convention.

Faber told reporters that he does not expect support from the Northern caudillo, though he says their relationship is “cordial.” As for the financial aspects, Faber says he prefers to talk about how he runs his own campaign rather than worry about his opponent, adding “The kind of campaign that I run is backed by my own activity in the part for many years now as you’ve heard me say. It is backed by an engagement over the many years that no other candidate in this race can top.”

Faber and Vega clashed directly for first Deputy Leader at the UDP’s convention in Corozal Town in 2014, a contest Vega won handily. Faber and Saldivar have clashed twice – when Faber won the party chairmanship in Orange Walk in 2011, and after Vega’s departure, in May 2016 when Faber defeated Saldivar for his current post.
