San Pedro Town Council revisits toll price increase following outcry from residents

Posted: Sunday, September 29, 2019. 8:38 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The San Pedro Town Council has announced, via its social media page, that it is halting and reviewing a decision to increase the toll rates of the Sir Barry Bowen toll bridge on the island following intense outcry from residents about the intended new prices.

According to the Council, the new rates were scheduled to become effective on October 16, but the council updated residents that after taking the many complaints into consideration, it has decided to revisit the strategy. It noted that it would be sending out a new release early next week detailing the decision made with regard to the new toll rates.

“We apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused and we thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” the council wrote to residents in its Facebook post.

The new proposed rates would have seen round trip rates go up across the board for golf carts ($5), taxis and small vehicles ($10), goods vehicles ($15/$25), flat bed and container trucks ($150) and heavy equipment ($250). The rates for dump trucks going one way would have increased to $150 with rates for water trucks jumping to $50 per tank and containers at $500 per crossing.

Upon hearing the news, residents were up in arms about the inconvenience many of them believe they would experience as a consequence of the new rates, with some noting that they need to cross the bridge multiple times a day for work.
