The park was established by the Itzamna Society and was signed into law as a national park by the Government of Belize on 23 February 2001.
The park lies approximately 7.5 miles south of the western highway and San Ignacio, on the north-facing foothills of the Maya Mountains Massif.
Itzamna Society is a community based organization with its headquarters in San Antonio, Cayo.
The society exists for the Preservation, Conservation of the Natural Resources, Cultural Patrimony and Community Development.
Itzamna Society consists of volunteer members representing the communities of San Antonio, Cristo Rey, and El Progresso 7 miles.
