By Aaron Humes: This week, the Public Service Union was served thirty days’ notice to vacate the national headquarters office on the Hilltop in Belmopan.
The owners of the property, a Corozal company called Simplex Designs Limited, wrote to P.S.U. president Gerald Henry through attorney Estevan Perrera asking that they leave or face court action.
Henry told reporters earlier this week that he had never said, as alleged by Simplex, that the Union was ready to leave. It believes they have “equitable interest” in the property and should be compensated.
The efforts of Prime Minister and titular minister for the Public Service, Dean Barrow and to a lesser extent the Belmopan City Council to resolve the situation were fruitless, and the Prime Minister told reporters on Wednesday that “Government would be more than inclined to try and help” the Union find land elsewhere in the capital. He refused to directly comment on what he called the “legal wrangling” except to call the affair “regrettable.”
According to Channel 7 News, attorney Perrera says that he’s not sure what the P.S.U. mean by “equitable interest”. But he will reach out to the union and, quote, “Hopefully it is something that can be discussed.”
