House, by division, approves controversial Joshua Perdomo write-off

Posted: Friday, October 4, 2019. 11:08 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The controversial write-off of a student loan for son of Cabinet Secretary Carlos, Joshua Perdomo, who failed to return to Belize to work off a commitment to the Government, was approved by division of the House of Representatives, 17-10 with four absences, this morning.

Perdomo was approved 27 months of study leave to pursue a Master’s degree in forensic genetics at the University of North Texas, and was bonded three years for $39,156.48, and overpaid another $1,318.40, for a total $40,474.88

He failed to resume duties at the expiration of his leave and his Government service was terminated on September 1, 2011.

Perdomo failed to make his monthly payments and was not available otherwise.

After being unable to get Speaker Laura Longsworth to approve further debate, Opposition Leader John Briceño asked for the division which went along party lines.

The Government had argued that the collection of the debt owed was now statute-barred, but the Opposition complained that it showed bias to a believed U.D.P. supporter.
