House debates old motions and new bills, welcomes children

Posted: Friday, October 4, 2019. 10:42 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The House of Representatives today has a packed agenda as it welcomes schoolchildren from the Standard Five and Six classes of Holy Ghost Roman Catholic Primary of Dangriga, and St. Martin Government Primary of Belmopan.

The youngsters are there to observe today’s debates on key motions and bills as part of their Social Studies classes on Government and Politics, for which they will be tested on the Primary School Examination (PSE).

Belize will also be participating in the International Youth Parliament on November 20.

Meanwhile, the House received reports on the five write-off motions carried over from August’s meeting, including the controversial write-off of a student loan for son of Cabinet Secretary Carlos, Joshua Perdomo, who failed to return to Belize to work off a commitment to the Government. But the debate was held in August and no further debate is permitted.

A motion for a CDB loan to Belize Electricity Limited for US$6.84 million to assist in reducing GHG emissions and improve reliability of the supply of electricity to Caye Caulker, with increased capability to meet projected increase in peak demand will be debated, along with several new bills and amendments to previous legislation.

As per usual we will have continuing coverage throughout the day.
