Senate debates motions and financial amendment bills

Posted: Wednesday, October 9, 2019. 11:11 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Senate meets to consider and assent to several important bills and motions brought from the Lower House which met on Friday.

The five motions for write-offs, including the controversial Joshua Perdomo student loan write-off of more than $40,000 which he never repaid after being sent on study leave and not returning to Belize, and the loan motion for US$6.8 million to Belize Electricity Limited to, among other things, provide electricity to Caye Caulker village, will be discussed.

Also before the Senate are the amendment to the Contractor-General Act which will keep its holder in public office after his term, and the package of bills and amendments designed to appease the European Union and OECD which are minded to keep Belize on the list of countries designated a non-cooperative jurisdiction for tax purposes which took place at the end of February.

Senator Elena Smith (Trade Unions and Civil Society) is absent due to illness and has been replaced for this session by Marvin Mora.
