By BBN Staff: An official statement published on the website of the Mexican Senate on October 17, 2019, says that the Senate is urging the country’s national migration institute to facilitate and increase the issuance of regional visitor cards to citizens of Belize seeking to enter Mexican territory.
This is because according to them, the Mexican southern border has seen a drop in investment.
Since April 2019, the courtesy passes were reportedly suspended which allowed entry to Mexico for up to 72 hours without the need to present a passport.
The Senate noted that since then, the visit to Quintana Roo has been reduced by 50%.
In addition, the local economy has seen a fall in sales attributed to the cancellation of the courtesy pass.
In the year 2018, about 30,000 Belizeans crossed the border every month.
Of those, 21,000 used their permits.
