By Aaron Humes: Belize Rural South area representative Manuel Heredia Jr. is throwing his hat in the ring for second deputy party leader, taking on Belize Rural Central representative Beverly Williams.
Heredia has three terms in Government and years of experience compared to Williams but neither has held office in the party before.
Speaking on his home turf, Heredia confirmed he plans to run for a fourth and final time in the next upcoming general election, but this electoral run is about giving back to the party he has called home from the beginning.
The Tourism Minister emphasized his independence, stating he spoke to no one but his wife about his plans – not even Prime Minister and party leader Dean Barrow. He made the final decision to enter just this week after returning from a trip abroad.
Heredia said he declined to “run with” either of the leadership candidates – Patrick Faber and John Saldivar – stating that the lower party positions ought not to be held hostage to internal divisions and that he can work with either man and the full slate elected next February.
And at 68 years old, Heredia dismissed health concerns, stating that he set this course for himself and it was now up to his fellow party members to judge his worth.
We’ll have more from the Minister on other issues later.
