By BBN Staff: Yesterday, Mayor Bernard Wagner of the Belize City Council celebrated the one year anniversary of the super sale zone.
The super sale zone, held once per month in downtown Belize City is somewhat of a commercial freezone in which residents are able to shop at discounted prices and local merchants are able to see increased economic activity.
BBN spoke to Mayor Wagner who said, “When we came in we found a dysfunctional attitude towards the downtown area. The past administration had a cop-out attitude towards the historical downtown area which obviously contributed to the downturn in business activity in that area. They were more driven towards empowering the Central American Boulevard dynasty rather than empowering our local businesses which had been here with us historically. This stretch of commerce in the downtown area is the only remaining part of Belize City that still characterizes Belizean.”
“In addition there was this huge exodus of money that was leaving our city every weekend for Chetumal. We as a responsible city council wanted to do our part. We could not just sit back and allow this to continue we wanted to contribute to changing the trend. And after one year, we have seen this movement grow from 20 businesses to 80 businesses. From 1,500 shoppers to now 15,000 shoppers. We had to explore new ideas and become innovative,” he added.
Mayor Wagner concluded by quoting Edith Wilder who once said “exploration is the engine that drives innovation, innovation drives economic growth. So let’s all go exploring.”
We note that in recent times there have been a decrease of Belizean shoppers to Chetumal, Mexico.
