By Aaron Humes: This evening, the Ministry of Sports, National Sports Council and Football Federation of Belize will welcome home the Central American Football Union (UNCAF) under-18 sub-champion side with a luncheon at the Marion Jones Stadium.
Also to be honored are the gold medalists from the under-13 boys’ volleyball team that won gold at the CODICADER Games in Costa Rica a week ago.
Belize drew with Panama in its under-18 opener; beat Guatemala 1-0 and El Salvador on penalties in the semi-final after a 2-2 draw. But the hosts proved the “bogey team,” sweeping the Jaguars aside 5-1 in the group stage and on Saturday, 4-0 in the final.
The Costa Ricans opened up the Belize defense with three goals in the second half after only scoring one in the first 35 minutes. But the juniors go one better than the senior side who finished fourth in Costa Rica in 2013 in the Nations’ Cup. El Salvador beat Nicaragua 3-1 and took third place.
