Social Security Board to introduce fingerprint recognition

Posted: Thursday, October 31, 2019. 8:42 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Social Security Board (SSB)  is upgrading its registration process to rely on Biometric Scanning in the form of fingerprint recognition.

Outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Colin Young, explained that the system will speed up the application process and safeguard the

SSB. Young said that the system will have to be backed by legislation to account for people who have missing appendages due to injury or illness, which was a common question raised as the SSB did its countrywide consultations.

“The whole idea behind it is that it will allow us to identify persons and we’re sure that that person is who they say they are and we’ll also be using it to replace the current proof of life forms that you have to sign every six months if you’re a pensioner,” Young said.

“So in order to access your pension payments rather than filling out a form and signing it you would now be able to use your fingerprints to be able to show us that you’re still alive so that you could continue to get your payments.”

Young also assured Belizeans that the process will be secure and that the company offering the service is globally recognized. The hope is to implement the system by next year.
