Garifuna Settlement Day activities underway in the Jewel

By Aaron Humes: This morning in the capital, Belmopan, the Garinagu people gathered for the annual national solidarity mass which acknowledges the unity of all Garinagu in Belize and the diaspora.

Later tonight, young Garinagu women from all the major communities are participating in the National Miss Garifuna Pageant.

Belize City is represented by 19 year old junior college student, Nirie Centeno.

Branch President of the National Garifuna Council (NGC) for the Old Capital, Nerisi Lopez, told us that Ms. Centeno was taken under the wings of Garifuna elders and leaders of the community to be trained for the pageant.

More than just about pretty faces, the pageant promotes and tests knowledge of the Garifuna culture and language.

It is hoped that Centeno will break a lengthy drought for winners of the National Miss Garifuna from the City. Reigning Miss Garifuna, Ms. Edreena Lambey who hails from Belmopan, will do the honors of handing over the crown to the winner of tonight’s competition.

Later on we will have details of the official opening of Garifuna Settlement Day celebrations in Belize City which took place last night.

The theme for this year is “Lererun Garifuna lagùchabei labagaridun Garifunadúaü. Garifuna Language is the foundation of Garifuna survival.”
