By BBN Staff: Last Thursday Shanty’s Store in Corozal Town was searched by a special task force which included the Belize Police Department, the Belize Tax Services and the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).
That search led to the discovery of US $60,000 as well as US $74,000 in different denominations.
Additionally the team found BZ $181 and CAN $350.
A whopping 1.6 million pesos, hundreds of quetzal and 122 rupees were also found.
Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, today revealed that the proprietors of the store were operating a “casa de cambio,” without a permit, an offense for which they will be charged.
According to Williams, they will face a string of other financial related charges.
In the meantime the monies found will be held by the Belize Police Department.
Williams indicated that this operation is a part of a larger operation to combat white collar crimes especially tax evasion and money laundering.
