By Aaron Humes: Hopkins’ own Deveene Martinez captured the National Miss Garifuna Belize title at the Cultural Pageant held at the Belmopan Civic Center on Saturday.
She now carries the standard of her people into this year’s celebrations of Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19.
Martinez and seven others – Niri Centeno (Belize City), Dana Reyes (San Pedro); Jessie
Mclaughin (Dangriga); Chastidy Williams (Seine Bight); Kathy Ramirez (Georgetown); Leretha Jones (Peini – Punta Gorda) and Taruni Gonzalez (Belmopan) showcased their fluency of the language through their introduction and presentation, which focused on an issue facing the Garifuna community or relevant to the theme for the November celebration. They also performed the various cultural dances and displayed the traditional clothing.
Williams placed second and Gonzalez third.
Attention now turns to the various cultural activities being scheduled in the major Garifuna communities and elsewhere leading up to the 19th, which features the Yurumein (Re-enactment) and official ceremonies.
The theme for this year is “Lererun Garifuna lagùchabei labagaridun Garifunadúaü. Garifuna Language is the foundation of Garifuna survival.”
