By Aaron Humes: Orange Walk North area representative Gaspar Vega and Belmopan colleague John Saldivar have long been allies and friends and Sunday’s campaign launch in the City was no different.
Vega, however, did not ultimately take up the first deputy leader position that was reportedly his to accept (it went to Corozal North’s Hugo Patt) and he told reporters that he is “considering”, with his constituents, whether he should contest for the open seat again after the departure of Homero Novelo.
Saldivar told KREM News’ Marisol Amaya that while Vega, as area representative and in charge of the O.W. North delegation, has pledged his support (“he is on my team”), he is not saying he will be standard-bearer.
In response to the same question, Vega told Channel 7 News’ Jules Vasquez, “I really don’t know that yet.” Pressed as to when he will know for sure, “The people will decide that… I will do it if my people ask me to do it.”
But Vega can’t be entirely ruled out, even considering that nemesis Ramon “Monchi” Cervantes Jr.’s P.U.P. won almost all of the village councils in the division earlier this year. Asked whether this means he can’t come back without that base support, Vega’s response was simple: “We’ll see.”
