Director of Health Services advises public to eliminate dengue risk factors

By BBN Staff: The Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero told Breaking Belize News today that he is encouraging all members of the public to clean up their surroundings and communities to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Dr. Manzanero said that the Western and Southern health regions have been screening people with fever and rash differently for any suspected cases of dengue.

With regard to the death of 14-year-old San Ignacio student, Jennifer Moreno, Manzanero stated that the Ministry has been able to ascertain that the child was in Southern Belize when she was infected with the disease.

Moreno died on Tuesday, just hours after being tested positive for dengue.

According to reports, the child began experiencing symptoms last week and on Monday, she was taken to the hospital by her mother.

According to Dr. Manzanero, on Tuesday a mapping was done at Sacred Heart College and the vector control is conducting continuous spraying throughout the Twin Towns and the country.

Manzanero said that the Vector Control Unit will be conducting investigations, mapping out areas and continue spraying.

The public is advised to be on the alert for dengue and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever.

 Since the illness is passed on by mosquitoes, every mosquito breeding site in your area increases your risk factor of being exposed to the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Mosquitoes breed in stagnant, water.

Having items such as tin cans, buckets, discarded tires and other artificial containers that hold stagnant water around a yard increase the number of mosquitoes and breeding sites in that area.

Mosquitoes also breed in drains, untended pools, birdbaths, and clogged rain gutters.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) is calling on all Belizeans to do their part in the fight against dengue, by ensuring that their yards are free of mosquito breeding sites.
