UB student government association calls for removal of student de-registration list off all social media platforms

By BBN Staff: The University of Belize (UB) Student Government Association (SGA) issued a statement calling on the institution to follow proper procedures as set out in the UB handbook and in the Constitution of Belize with relations to the publication of students’ ID numbers on social media.

The SGA says that while it recognizes that the institution uses the tuition as an income source, it reminds that publicizing information along with sensitive data (students registration ID number) on social media is disappointing and unethical.

“Furthermore, this act infringes on the privacy, and confidentiality of each student within the published list,” the statement noted.

The SGA says that such an act is punitive and not conducive to nurturing a healthy learning environment.

“This is clearly condemned in the University of Belize Student Handbook. The UB Student Handbook, revised edition (2017) under states under sections 3.0 STUDENT DISCIPLINARY AND GRIEVANCES POLICIES AND PROCEDURES section 3.1 The University of Belize (UB) Student Code of Conduct subsection 3.1.4.3 Harassment, that action that intimidate, humiliate, demean, or cause harm to another. vi. Actions that invade the privacy of another such as threatening to disclose, or disclosing, a person’s sexuality or disability to others without their permission,” the SGA reminded.

In addition, the SGA urges the institution to conduct its business in accordance with the Constitution of Belize; under Chapter 4 PART II – Protection of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, subsection 14 (1) A person shall not be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his honor and reputation. The private and family life, the home and the personal correspondence of every person shall be respected.

Therefore, the SGA is calling for the removal of the student de-registration list from all social media platforms and to refrain from any future similar publication from the Office of Finance and Budget or any University related office.

“The ASG is demanding that the University upholds their constitutional responsibilities including the Laws of Belize stated in this article. We are requesting that the university revert to its former policy which withheld student’s grades and/or blocked students from accessing student portal but do not prevent students from achieving their academic goals,” the statement ended.
