By Micah Goodin: The Belize Police Department continues to say that crime is down.

However, there seems to be a disparity between those statistics and our collective experiences at the community level.

For those of us on the ground, crime continues to spiral out of control.

Additionally, the victims are no longer hardened criminals marked for death but innocent bystanders and model citizens who contribute to the development of our country.

I never imagined that in 2019 three prominent athletes would die by gunshot injuries.

The first to die was Dwayne Cummings. He was shot down in February while making his way home after a basketball game in Orange Walk Town.

Justice is yet to be served for this star athlete and university student.

And then on a warm afternoon in July, Allison Major was shot dead, by a police officer no less, who was sworn to protect and serve others.

Major was an athlete, community leader and teacher killed for nothing more than a traffic-related offense in downtown Belize City.

Again his killer is yet to be convicted.

Last night no one thought that it was Giovanni Lennan’s life that was mercilessly cut short on Welch Street in Belize City.

Lennan, a star athlete and firefighter, could not hurt a fly even if he tried his best.

He really was an innocent youth.

Again just as before we wait for justice to be served.

But justice is a husband who never showed up at his own wedding ceremony.

He will never come.

Before we can fully mourn the passing of Lennan there will be another murder and another after that.

And more than likely they will be unsolved and forgotten.

Like Anisha Young. Like Mark Pollard. Like Yeshua Roaches. Like Tyler Savery. Like Albert Cattouse. Like Kareem Clarke. Like my father.

And yet the Belize Police Department will tell us that crime is down when we know otherwise.

We have lost our way as a people and as a country.

And until we truly come together to fight crime we will continue to be victims of it.
