Ocelot killed by poachers

Posted: Saturday, November 16, 2019. 2:26 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Our colleagues at PGTV have confirmed the discovery of a decapitated ocelot in southern Belize.

Reports are that the ocelot’s body was found in the dump area of Toledo this morning; however, the head was nowhere to be found and presumed to have been taken by poachers.

There was a similar incident reported on Friday, August 2, where authorities found a dead jaguar near the Georgetown bridge on the highway just between Georgetown and San Roman village. The animal had been shot and its fangs had been ripped out of its mouth.

Breaking Belize News (BBN) reminds the public that ocelots and jaguars are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act, Chapter 220 of the Laws of Belize, making it an offense to kill these protected animals.
