By BBN Staff: The Rotary Club of Belize has partnered with the Florida-based organization, Chair the Love, to distribute over 200 wheelchairs to Belizeans in need.
Over the weekend, Rotary Clubs from all over the country met with the team from Chair the Love to divide up some 280 wheelchairs. Glen Mather, founder of Chair the Love, explained that the organization started fundraising in 2018 to make the project, which cost around US $42,000, possible.
“We’re told that there’s a need for 100 million wheelchairs worldwide for people who cannot afford them. We just dropped a little pebble in the water, but to that one person, it is everything. So we did 280 everything,” Mather said.
He added that he had been to Belize several times prior and wanted to return and share Belize with others, but stressed that he wanted to return to Belize with a purpose.
Francis Woods, assistant service project director at the Rotary Club of Belize, said that the club wanted to ensure that the project had the maximum impact possible, which is why the Clubs from all the districts were called in to receive some chairs.
“We have 10 clubs countrywide, from Corozal to PG, out in the west in San Ignacio, all the way up in San Pedro and of course Belize City has two clubs. If anybody needs a chair they can check the local Rotary club in their district,” Woods said.
The Chair the Love team headed to San Pedro this morning to distribute some wheelchairs.
