By BBN Staff: Guatemalan news site, Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias, said that in an interview with Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales, he commented that with relation to the ‘Belize’ case, Guatemala is on the right track.
Morales spoke about the progress that his administration made in resolving the territorial, insular and maritime dispute with Belize.
Morales added that those efforts will be passed on to Guatemalan President elect, Alejandro Giammattei.
Morales informed that he has met with the president elect and discussed the ‘Belize’ case, which has to be treated confidentially.
In addition, Morales said that their attorneys participated in the meeting and raised the legal arguments that the country can present at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Guatemala held its national referendum in April, 2018 when Guatemalans voted ‘Yes’ to settle the dispute at the ICJ.
On May 9, 2019, Belize hosted its own national referendum and Belizeans also voted ‘Yes’ to take the territorial claim to the ICJ for a final settlement.
