Today is celebrated in Belize as Garifuna Settlement Day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Lererun Garifuna laguchabei lagaridum Garifunaduau” which means Garifuna Language is the foundation of Garifuna Survival.
The National Garifuna Council (NGC) began the month with the Annual Garifuna Solidarity Mass and activities highlighting Garifuna culture continued throughout November leading up to today.
The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) also highlighted the activities leading up to the rich cultural celebration.
Annually, hundreds of Belizeans gather in Dangriga to experience the Yurumein reenactment, which took place this morning depicting the arrival of the Garifunas into Belize.
The celebration continues throughout the day with Garifuna drumming, cultural food, and cultural presentations.
In 1802, the first group of Garinagu led by Alejo Beni arrived in Belizean waters.
Thomas Vincent Ramos led the charge to have the day officially recognized in the country and marking a celebration of the accomplishments of the Garinagu.
Happy Garifuna Settlement day!
