By Aaron Humes: With a commanding 3-set (26-24, 25-14, 25-15) win over Guatemala on yesterday, Team Belize secured a historic first medal in the U18 category of AFECAVOL Central American Volleyball. This is according to the Belize Volleyball Association.
In the first set, Belize recovered after being behind to win it 26-24 and from there dominated the game to get their third win, and secure a spot among the top three in the tournament.
According to the Volleyball Association, Gareth Bruce earned 18 points and Khaya Gordon, 16. Bruce earned 14 of those points on attack and 3 on serve, while Gordon got 4 on blocks. Belize dominated in attacks 39-19, blocks 6-3 and service 7-5. Belize had 26 unforced errors, and Guatemala 24.
Today’s games will determine the final ranking. Belize plays El Salvador at 3:00PM. Honduras vs. Nicaragua is at 5:00PM and Costa Rica vs. Guatemala is at 7:30PM.
In a post-game interview, team member Arianne Flores said that Team Belize will “play with heart, have fun and win!”
