By Aaron Humes: The Premier League of Belize (PLB) set up a twin-bill for the opening leg of the playoffs this evening, with the lower seeds hosting the higher seeds at home.
In Independence at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium, Altitude FC opened the scoring early and when the visitors lost Darrell Myvette to a second yellow card in added time, the Altitude must have thought they were on their way to a shock win.
But they reckoned without Everal Trapp, who fired from near midfield to rescue the draw, 1-1.
The second leg of the Verdes-Altitude matchup is next Sunday afternoon in San Ignacio.
Meanwhile in San Pedro, there was to be no repeat of San Pedro Pirates’ shocking win over the Bandits to secure the closing season title.
Forward Georgie Welcome was deployed as play-maker, setting up Roberto de Lima for a free kick in the 19th minute for Bandits’ first goal. They could have gotten a second but it was chalked off.
In the 57th minute, Nahjib Guerra read an errant short goal kick from Selvin Sagastume and scored for 2-0.
Pirates’ Jesse Smith answered in the 83rd minute but they could not get another and the match ended 2-1 in favor of the Bandits. San Pedro will now need to go into the Isidoro Beaton Stadium next Saturday night and steal a win in their quest to reach the finals.
