By Micah Goodin: As we look around our country there are so many reasons to be sad.
However, if we look a bit closer there are some reasons for elation, celebration and hope.
This week there were three things that should make all of us happy.
1. Our U-18 volleyball girl’s team gave Guatemala a severe beatdown last night.
We dominated the game from start to finish and ended it in three sets.
While we are overjoyed at this feat, the success of this team is even greater as they have won 3 out of 4 games.
There is a possibility that our girls can bring home some gold medals.
And which country doesn’t want that glory?
2. Our children’s parliament put our actual parliament to shame.
However, it was no circus act. There was no name calling and mudslinging.
Those children exercised decorum, eloquence, passion and research.
They have done what we all hope to see in the National Assembly.
Sober, pellucid and real representation.
On both sides of the floor they identified issues affecting children and not only offered criticisms but remedies.
Additionally, both sides cheered for the other during their remarks.
We should cheer for each other when we are all fighting for a better Belize.
3. The Garifuna culture, heritage and identity remains alive and vibrant.
Some of us were unfortunate but the majority of us had Hudut.
It is a beautiful thing when people of different backgrounds can come together and celebrate another’s heritage.
Throughout history and in some parts of the world, groups of people have been slaughtered and erased from civilization for being different.
I thank God that we can all get along here.
