Driver Jose Rodriguez avoids jail in traffic mishap

Posted: Tuesday, November 26, 2019. 6:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Honduran Jose Rodriguez, 58, must only pay a fine after pleading guilty last week to causing the death, by careless conduct, of 11-year-old Tezzrah Thompson in October of 2015.

On the afternoon of October 5, between miles 31 and 32 on George Price Highway, Rodriguez was driving a GMC pickup truck heading to Belize City, when he knocked down Thompson, a student of St. Matthews Government School who had just gotten off a school bus and was returning to her home in Mahogany Heights Village. The impact flung Thompson a distance from the truck and she sustained severe injuries to her head and body. She died later the same day at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Rodriguez pleaded guilty to causing death by careless conduct, having initially been charged with manslaughter by negligence.

The court ordered Rodriguez to pay three thousand dollars and gave him six months to pay the fine or face six months imprisonment failing to do so. Attorney Nazira Myles was representing Rodriguez while Crown Counsel Riis Cattouse prosecuted the case.
