By Aaron Humes: It is good riddance to 29-year-old Colin Francis, at least for now, from the family of the man he is accused of killing inside a police detention cell, 60-year-old Nestor Vasquez, Jr.
Yesterday we contacted Jules Vasquez, family spokesman, for comment and he said: “We had some sense of relief to learn that my brother’s killer has been charged. This should have happened months ago, and we are relieved it has happened now. Relief also that a dangerous man has been taken off the street.”
The statement adds, “I believe – based on his actions in those 5 days in June when he killed my brother and tried to kill Nurse [Augustina] Eligio (sic) – that he posed a real danger to society.”
Vasquez concludes, “Nonetheless, I lament also that there is no place to treat or put mentally ill and psychotic persons other than to warehouse them at the Belize Central Prison, which is a far from ideal situation.”
The Palmview Center in Belmopan, formerly “Rockview” and “Seaview,” typically houses mentally ill persons, but not those accused of a crime.
Francis will undergo a mental health evaluation as ordered by the court. He returns to court on the murder charge on January 7, and on the attempted murder charge on January 20.
