Police investigating apparent suicide in Queen Street cell block

Posted: Thursday, November 28, 2019. 2:50 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday a man died while in detention at the Queen Street police station of an apparent suicide.

He is North Front Street resident Jose Espinosa.

He had been detained at the Queen Street police station at about 2:30 p.m. for common assault.

However, he was later found hanging in his cell with a shoelace.

According to police, he was alone inside his cell.

It is standard police practice for a detainee to be stripped of shoelaces and belts before detention.

However, it is not yet known what led to the break down of this practice yesterday.

Police have since launched a criminal and internal investigation into this matter.
