In addition to these programs is the Wildlife Camera Trapping, whereby over 70 cameras were installed in the Chiquibul, Vaca and Mountain Pine Ridge forests.

This initiative is being done in partnership with panthera.

But, Manzanero also shared that unfortunately the issue of poaching and gold panning is still ongoing in the Chiquibul forests.

Manzanero noted that for the year 2019, there were 17 encounters with Guatemalans conducting illegal activity within the protected area.

In this regard, Manzanero thanked the Belize Defense Force, the Forestry Department and the police for their joint efforts in protecting Belize’s precious forests.

FCD has engaged in awareness and education campaigns with their own environmental educator, Justin Pook reaching out to Primary Schools and sharing the importance of the protection and preservation of Belize’s forests.

The FCD environmental youth group is also actively engaged with other environmental youth groups promoting environmental awareness.
